At Newport, we are always looking for ways to improve our business. For most of us, this involves asking what is wrong and how we can make it better. This is a natural response and something I do regularly. But there is another way to look at how to improve our business. In addition to looking at what is wrong, we should also ask what is working well and how to do more of it. This is what some call finding and growing the bright spots.
Bright spots are the areas of your life or business that are going well. Finding and increasing them can lead to even better performance. For example: If you have difficulty getting your work done each day in the allotted time, think about moments during the day when you are most productive and see if you can increase those during the day. If you are not hitting your sales targets, what about finding a sales colleague who is doing well and adopting their successful actions? If you had an amazing day where everything seemed to go right, then ask yourself: How do I create more moments like the ones I had today?
Sometimes, trying to do more of the right thing is more effective than trying to fix what is wrong. That is one of the main topics of this month’s employee/management conversations: Strengths and Talents. Take some time in the coming weeks to think about your bright spots, including your strengths and talents, and how you can make better use of them during your business day. I hope all of you can utilize this idea so you can spend more time in the bright spots.
